What is Image Pixelation?

Image pixelation is a technique that reduces the resolution of an image by grouping pixels into larger blocks, creating a mosaic-like effect. This process is commonly used for creating retro-style graphics, censoring sensitive content, or adding artistic effects to photos.

How Does the Pixelate Tool Work?

Our pixelation algorithm divides your image into a grid of squares based on the pixel size you choose. Each square is then filled with the average color of all pixels within that area, creating the characteristic blocky appearance of pixelated images.

Common Uses for Pixelation

Pixelation serves many purposes: protecting privacy by obscuring faces or license plates, creating pixel art for games or designs, adding retro aesthetics to modern photos, censoring sensitive information in screenshots, or simply creating unique artistic effects.

Adjusting Pixelation Intensity

The pixel size slider allows you to control the intensity of the pixelation effect. Smaller values (2-10px) create subtle pixelation that maintains image clarity, while larger values (20-50px) produce more dramatic, abstract results perfect for artistic effects or stronger censorship.

Smooth Edges Option

The smooth edges toggle applies anti-aliasing to the pixelated blocks, creating softer transitions between pixels. This can make the pixelation effect appear less harsh and more visually pleasing, especially when using larger pixel sizes.

Supported Image Formats

Our pixelation tool supports all major image formats including JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP, and BMP. The tool preserves transparency in PNG images and maintains the original aspect ratio of your images throughout the pixelation process.
