What is Background Remover?
Background Remover is a free online tool that removes any background color from images and makes it transparent. Unlike tools limited to white or green backgrounds, this tool auto-detects the dominant background color by sampling the corners of your image, or lets you click directly on the color you want to remove. Adjust tolerance and edge softness for pixel-perfect results on logos, product photos, portraits, and graphics.
How to Remove Background Color from an Image
Upload your image to get started. The tool automatically detects the most common background color from the four corners of your image. To select a different color, switch to Manual mode and click directly on the background area you want to remove. Use the Tolerance slider to control how many similar shades get removed - lower values remove only exact matches while higher values capture gradients and subtle color variations. The Edge Softness slider creates smooth anti-aliased transitions between the subject and transparent areas.
Understanding Tolerance and Edge Softness
Tolerance determines how closely a pixel must match the target color to be removed, measured as Euclidean distance in RGB color space. A tolerance of 0 removes only the exact color match. Tolerance around 20-40 works well for solid backgrounds with slight variations from compression or lighting. Higher values of 60-100 handle gradients, shadows, and complex backgrounds. Edge Softness adds anti-aliasing by gradually fading alpha values near the tolerance threshold, creating smooth professional edges instead of harsh jagged cutouts.
Invert Selection for Creative Effects
The Invert Selection option reverses the removal - instead of removing the selected color, it removes everything except that color. This is useful for isolating specific colored elements from complex images, extracting colored text or logos from busy backgrounds, or creating color-based masks for design work. Combined with tolerance control, invert selection gives you precise control over which parts of the image remain visible.
Download Transparent Images
Download your background-removed images as PNG format to preserve full alpha channel transparency. PNG is ideal for logos, overlays, web graphics, and any image that needs to layer on top of other content without visible background rectangles. WebP format offers smaller file sizes with transparency support for web optimization. JPG format fills transparent areas with white and is best when transparency is not needed.
