AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is a modern, open-source image format based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It delivers exceptional compression efficiency, producing files that are significantly smaller than JPEG, PNG, and even WebP while maintaining excellent visual quality. AVIF supports both lossy and lossless compression, HDR (High Dynamic Range), wide color gamut, and transparency.
AVIF offers substantial improvements over older formats. Compared to JPEG, AVIF files are typically 50% smaller at the same visual quality. Compared to WebP, AVIF achieves 20-30% better compression. AVIF also supports features that JPEG lacks entirely, such as transparency (alpha channel), HDR content, and 10-bit or 12-bit color depth. For web developers and photographers, AVIF represents the next generation of image optimization.
AVIF is supported by Chrome (version 85+), Firefox (version 93+ for decoding, 113+ for encoding), Edge, Opera, and Samsung Internet. Safari added AVIF support in version 16.4. As of 2025, AVIF has over 93% global browser support for decoding. For encoding via the Canvas API, support is more limited (Chrome 94+ and Firefox 113+). Use the HTML picture element with JPEG or WebP fallbacks for maximum compatibility.
This tool runs entirely in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your images are never uploaded to any server, ensuring complete privacy. Simply upload your image, choose the output format and quality, and download the converted file. Batch conversion is supported for processing multiple files at once. If your browser does not support AVIF encoding, you can still convert AVIF images to other formats like PNG, JPG, or WebP.
